What This Means For Companion

Companion Will Have A Short Theatrical Run

Companionwas released domestically on January 31, giving the movie justthree weekends of theatrical exclusivitybefore hitting digital. In that time, the movie had a respectable showing at the box office.Companionreceived positive reviewsandmade $33.2 million worldwide, which is a decent return on its estimated $10 million budget. Given this box office traction, it is reasonable to guess thatCompanionmight also pull good numbers during its digital release.

Companionstill has a relatively quick digital release, however. Big studios seem to be giving films shorter and shorter theatrically exclusive windows overall, and this year has been no exception.Sony’sOne of Them Dayshad just four weekends in theaters before it was moved to digital. As in the case ofCompanion, this was despite the film performing well at the box office. This shows that studios are not prioritizing theatrical exclusivity as much as they used to, even for movies that are profitable.

Our Take On Companion’s Digital Release Date

Companion Has Horror Competition

Looking more broadly at the release calendar,Companion’s move to digital makes a lot of sense. The Valentine’s Day-themed horror filmHeart Eyeswas released in theaters on February 7, and managed to beat outCompanionboth weekends that it was at the box office. The Osgood Perkins horror movieThe Monkeyis also coming at the end of this week, which would be another competing horror film forCompanion. For this reason, theCompanionteam is likely making the right call by getting the movie onto digital now.
