Summary

Warning: SPOILERS for chapter #173 of Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Manis back to the riveting action that made it as popular as it is, and it has introduceda new devilthat is not only one of the most frightening and grotesque ones, but also one that could play a huge role going forward. The series has had some unique and sometimes absurd devils, but few stand out above the rest due to their design, including this mysterious new villain that presents a type of horror completely different from that of the main villain of Part 1, Makima.

In chapter #173 ofChainsaw Man, the Public Safety was fighting hard to take downDenji after transforming into the Hero of Hell, and although the new division was obliterated almost immediately, they still had a card up their sleeves.

This new and still mysterious Devil clearly stands out from the inferior ones that populate Hell. Its design is among the most grotesque seen in the series, especially considering the chair the creature is sitting on, carried on the back of two naked humans. This reminded readers of the creativity of Tatsuki Fujimoto and his capacity to transmit horror in different forms.

Despite initial cause for optimism after her head was served on a platter, a troubling trend spells danger for Chainsaw Man’s little sister.

Chainsaw Man Introduces a New Devil That Could Be a Primal Fear

The New Villains Stands Out For Its Grotesque Design

While the specific name of the devil has not been disclosed, well-founded speculations are suggesting thatthe newly introduced devil might potentially be identified as the Pain Devil. This is seen as a primal fear entity and could be on par with the series' first and most unnerving villain, Makima. However, while Makima was scary due to her capacity to take away free will from her victims, this new devil goes back to a more immediate type of horror due to its grotesque and unsettling design.

Once it was confirmed that the Ear Devil was consumed by the Hero of Hell, three Public Safety agents cut off their fingers and used them to write the word “HIT” on a mirror. A devil that was sitting on a throne carried by two naked men saw the message and attacked Pochita with a fist, but was unable to restrain him and lost three fingers in the process. However, Yoshida miraculously saved the day andforced Pochita to vomit the Ear Devil, restoring hearing around the world.

Although it is purely speculation, there is some valid information that suggests the identity of this devil. The agent first had to cut off a finger to communicate with the devil, and it was also inflicting pain on the humans that carry him around. Furthermore, the Falling Devil hinted that pain was a primal fear. Still, this is all speculation at this point, and the new devil could be associated with a completely different kind of fear.

How Public Safety plans to use this devil could be a plot point going forward too. Whether the latest devil inChainsaw Manlives up to the prevailing theories or defies them, it is undeniably a formidable and menacing presence both in terms of its appearance and its demonstrated abilities despite only appearing for a brief time.
