Summary

Warning: Contains spoilers for Chainsaw Man Chapter #174Chainsaw ManPart Two, despite being nearly 80 chapters and running in length, has never truly revealed its main villain. The looming presence of the Death Devilwas introduced earlier in the story but has yet to be shown or given any motivation for a future attack. In the most recent chapter #174, humorously titled, “Ayyy, Aging”,the true villains of Part Two finally seem to have made themselves known.

The forces of evil shown to be at work are, unfortunately and realistically, very human, and their plans are riddled with corruption, greed, and ego. Standing at the center of it all isPublic Safety, pulling strings similarly to how Makima was in Part One. However, with Chainsaw Man still on a rampage near the sushi restaurant, their plans may be in jeopardy.

Fumiko explains Public Safety’s plans to Japanese government officials in chapter #174 of Chainsaw Man.

This plan is as grandiose as it gets, as Public Safety wants to abuse Chainsaw Man’s incredible power of erasing things from existence to advance the evolution of humanity. The price they are willing to pay for this shows just how ruthless these humans can be, making devils look tame by comparison.

The True Villains of Chainsaw Man Part 2 Want to Evolve Humankind

Public Safety Plans To Use Chainsaw Man To Erase Selected Aspects of Life

Chapter #174 opens with a meeting between high-ranking Japanese government officials, discussing the recent disappearance and reappearance of ears. At the center of the action is Fumiko, making her grand re-entrance into the story after several chapters away. When asked what Public Safety’s intentions are,Fumiko states that they want to progress human evolution, by using Chainsaw Man to eat and erase “harmful” things from the world, starting with the Aging Devil.

Fumiko then reveals that the Aging Devil will agree to let itself be eaten by Chainsaw Man, so long as they put 10,000 Japanese children to their deaths. What should illicit an immediate and resounding ‘no’ from the government officials, is instead deliberated on, and eventually agreed to. Unfortunately, it seemsthe true evils ofChainsaw ManPart 2 are grounded in realistic themes of corruption and greed ingovernment leaders. Author Tatsuki Fujimoto is no stranger to incorporating themes such as this in his work, but never has he made them so overt.

The Two Characters' Similarities Raise Questions About Fumiko

Fumiko, while making her pitch, lists off several things that she believes humanity would be better off without. The line of dialogue is a near-perfect echo of Makima, when she was explaining Chainsaw Man’s erasing powers along with her plans in chapter #84. Also, Fumiko seems to have filled Makima’s role of representative for Public Safety when meeting with government officials.

The difference is that Makima’s plan was only a cover she presented to Public Safety to hide her true intentions toward Chainsaw Man, while Fumiko seems to be speaking earnestly, at least for now. These similarities raise questions about Fumiko’s identity, as well as her true motives. She is presented throughout the story as human, though someone who is fine with sacrificing the lives of 10,000 childrenwould make a pretty decent Death Devil.

Makima tells of troubles humanity would be better off without in chapter #84 of Chainsaw Man.

Part 2 ofChainsaw Manhas often been criticized for its slow pace, but it seems the story is finally ready to shift gears. The reveal of the evil plan of Public Safety, soon afterthe emergence of Chainsaw Man’s true form, is surely a signal that fans should strap themselves in and get ready for some madness and violence.
