Mickey 17 Comes In Ever-So Slightly Above Original $18 Million Projections
This article was originally written Saturday AM and has been updated Sunday AM with up-to-date box office projections (in bold), a full chart, and further analysis.

Mickey 17has dethronedCaptain America: Brave New Worldin spite of its lukewarm debut. The newest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie debuted at No. 1 over Presidents' Day weekend and maintained that position for three consecutive weekends at the domestic box office, batting away competing new releases includingPaddington in Peru,The Monkey, andLast Breath. Its latest contender is theMickey 17release. The Robert Pattinson sci-fi movie, in which he plays multiple clones who are used as expendable test subjects, is the first feature from director Bong Joon Ho since his 2019 Best Picture winnerParasite.
PerVariety, as of Sunday morning,Mickey 17is projected to take in a 3-day opening weekend total of$19.1 millionat the domestic box office. This hardly makes a dent in its reported $118 million budget, which likely makes it so that it will need to earn $295 million or more worldwide to break even. However, this total is stillmore than enough for it to toppleCaptain America: Brave New Worldfrom the No. 1 position.

In its third weekend, the Marvel movie has sunk to No. 2 for the first timewith an $8.5 million haul, ahead of weekend 2 ofLast Breath, which has seen a not too shabby drop of 47%. This bringsBrave New World’s domestic haul to $177 million in North America and $370.8 million worldwide, which makes it the highest-grossing English-language movie of the year. Below, see the full Top 5 chart for the domestic box office this weekend:

$19.1 million (weekend 1)
2

$14.5 million (weekend 2)
4

$31 million (weekend 3)
5

$36.9 million (weekend 4)
With theCaptain America: Brave New Worldreleasemaintaining a position in the Top 2 even though it has fallen from its perch at the top of the chart, there has necessarily been some movement among the holdover titles on the chart. However, the previous weekend’s No. 2 through No. 4 have simply shifted down one slot apiece, withLast Breath’s aforementioned drop,The Monkeyfalling 39.2% in week 3 andPaddington in Perudropping just 15.9% during its fourth weekend in domestic theaters.
The only movie that has fallen off the chart entirely is DreamWorks’Dog Man, which is at No. 6 in its sixth weekend. Meanwhile, one new release - the Paul W. S. Anderson-directed George R. R. Martin adaptationIn the Lost Lands- has barely managed to find a rung at the distant bottom of the chart, landing at No. 10 with a projected $1 million debut, which is about even with Angel Studios' inspirational dramaRule Breakers, which debuted at No. 9.
What This Means For Mickey 17
There Is Some Triumph Mixed With Its Disappointing Debut
In spite of falling far short of its budget, the domestic opening forMickey 17is still the third-best of 2025 so far, falling behind the $88.8 million debut ofCaptain America: Brave New Worldand the $36 million bow ofDog Man,but coming in slightly ahead ofDen of Thieves: Pantera’s $15 million. While theBong Joon Ho movieis technically not original because it is based on Edward Ashton’s novelMickey 7, this still marksthe best debut for a non-franchise movie of the year, asDog Manis a spinoff from DreamWorks' 2017 movieCaptain Underpants.
Captain America: Brave New Worldhas had the best debut of the year so far, but it is still tracking poorly compared to previous MCU movies and remains the 32nd highest-grossing movie of the 35-film franchise worldwide at the time of writing.
However, its comparative success does not mitigate the huge risk taken on by the movie’s budget. AlthoughParasitewas an Oscar-winning critical and commercial smash, it only grossed $262.6 million worldwide, which still wouldn’t have been enough to hit the new movie’s estimated break-even point. WhileMickey 17reviewshave been kind, earning ita Certified Fresh score of 79% from critics on Rotten Tomatoesalongside a 75% audience score, these scores are nowhere nearParasite’s scores of 99% and 95% respectively, which could spell bad news for the Robert Pattinson movie’s potential as a similar word-of-mouth success.
Our Take On The Weekend Box Office
March Could Continue To Disappoint
After 2025 opened with a roster of movies that weren’t runaway hits but were collectively turning out strong grosses,March has so far failed to live up to that promise. Given the similarly lukewarm projections for the upcominglive-actionSnow Whiteremake, which is the biggest remaining release of March, it ultimately seems unlikely thatCaptain America: Brave New WorldandMickey 17will find strong competition for even their modest grosses until eitherA Minecraft Moviedebuts in April or May delivers the tentpolesThunderbolts*,Lilo & Stitch, andMission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.
