The BBC’sLord of the Fliesseries receives a major filming and cast update, along with a famous composer signing on to provide the score. William Golding’s 1954 novel, which follows a group of young boys stranded on an island, has been adapted to the screen twice before in the1963 and 1990Lord of the Fliesfilms. Last year, it was announced that the BBC was adapting a newLord of the Fliesseries from screenwriter Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials) and director Marc Munden (The Sympathizer).

Now,theBBC’sLord of the Fliesseries has started filming in Malaysia with a castthat includes David McKenna as Piggy, Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as Jack, Isaac Talbut as Simon, Thomas Connor as Roger, Noah and Cassius Flemyng as twins Sam and Eric, Cornelius Brandreth as Maurice, and Tom Page-Turner as Bill. Most importantly, Hans Zimmer will compose the scorealongside Kara Talve.

Many of the cast members for the BBC’sLord of the Fliesseries areunknown and are making their professional acting debuts. They were selected through an open casting call that required no previous acting experience, with the auditions conducted by the renowned casting director Nina Gold, known for her previous work onGame of Thrones,The Power of the Dog, andBaby Reindeer. In addition to the aforementioned cast members, there is an ensemble of over 20 other boys portraying the “littluns"and “biguns” who comprise the desert island camp.

In 2019, Luca Guadagnino began developing aLord of the Fliesremake, though it’s made little progress as the director has focused on other projects in recent years.

ThoughLord of the Flieshas already been adaptedinto two feature films, the BBC series will be the first for television.Thorne’s adaptation is said to stay true to the original novel, which is set in the early 1950s on an unnamed Pacific island, and explore its deep emotional themes, such as human nature, the loss of innocence, and boyhood masculinity. The series will only span four episodes, with each named after a central character – Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and Jack – providing a unique perspective on the boys' shared struggles and their responses to their situation.

The fact that Zimmer is composing the score ensures thatthe BBC’sLord of the Fliesseries will sound suitably epic. Zimmer is better known for his iconic film scores – includingPirates of the Caribbean,Christopher Nolan movies, andDune– though he has also frequently lent his talents to television, composing music forPlanet Earthand other shows. With filming now underway, the BBC’sLord of the Fliesseries should premiere sometime in 2025 or perhaps early 2026.
