An acclaimedNBCsitcom is getting the remake treatment. Although a few genre-defining comedies on the network have steadfastly avoided going through a revival or a reboot, such asFriendsandSeinfeld, another influential comedy has had several iterations.The Officeoriginated as a British workplace sitcom, spearheaded by Ricky Gervais. Still, following the global reach of the U.S. version, more country-specific offshoots have popped up.
There areseveral remakes ofThe Office, including versions that recreate standout scenes from the original. Therehas also been the recent Australian take onThe Officefor Prime Video, which went in a different direction by casting a female character in the bumbling Michael Scott role. A more recent well-liked NBC workplace comedy is getting a remake, albeit only the second.

A remake ofSuperstoreis in the works. Debuting in 2015 by creator Justin Spitzer, the six-season comedy followed a group of employees who work at a fictional big-box store called Cloud 9.The cast ofSuperstoreincluded America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Sakura, and Mark McKinney.The series received consistently strong reviews, often regarded as an underrated workplace sitcom.
Showmax is also planning a South African adaptation ofThe Office.
Deadlineconfirms that African streaming platformShowmax has ordered a local version of NBCUniversal’sSuperstore. It will be aZulu-language adaptationthat’s produced locally by Barkers Media in association with Universal International Studios. Production is expected to begin later this year, while the casting and exact story details are unknown. Executives and decision-makers shared thoughts on the upcoming series in a pair of remarks.
Nicola van Niekerk, Executive Head of Programming at Showmax’s South Africa-based parent MultiChoice, referred to Cloud 9 and praised the original in a statement:
“We’re on Cloud 9. I laughed my way through every episode ofSuperstoreand can’t wait to see how the funny and loveable characters are reimagined in our complex country.”
This was echoed by Hannah Mabruk, VP, Format Sales for NBCUniversal Formats, who expressed excitement about seeingSuperstorein a new light:
“I cannot wait to seeSuperstoretake on a whole new life in South Africa. It’s a format that resonates with audiences around the world because of its undeniable humour, heart, and universal themes of community and friendship flourishing in the workplace. Together with our longtime partners at Showmax and the team at Barkers Media, we look forward to bringing a uniquely South African spin to these lovable characters in a fresh and exciting new way.”
Showmax is a natural home for aSuperstoreremake,considering that it also streams the original. It is the second remake of the NBC show following a Spanish-language adaptation. With the title ofSupertitlán,the first remake debuted in 2022 and aired 48 episodes. It featured a large ensemble of main and recurring actors.
