Below Deck Sailing Yachtseason 5 has been difficult for the majority of the cast, butdeckhand Emma Crouch had such a difficult time that she was fired, leaving a spot open on the crew. ThroughoutBelow Deckfranchise history, there have been dozens of yachties who have been fired from their positions because of inexperience, inability, insubordination, or a combination of the three. While there have been many yachties who have found themselves struggling and being able to improve, others haven’t had the easiest time learning while also trying to be focused on doing their job in the moment.
ThroughoutBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 5, Emma has had a hard time with the responsibilities of a deckhand, and it’s been clear to viewers for most of the season that she wouldn’t be improving her skills. WhileEmma was a welcome addition to theBelow Deck Sailing Yachtcrew early onin the season, things began to stall out within the first few charters of the season. Despite seeming to have some of the responsibilities of a deckhand on a sailing yacht down, Emma had very little ability moving into the charter season, and her attitude didn’t help her.

Emma’s inability to take criticismfrom the exterior team was unhelpful during her time onBelow Deck Sailing Yacht.Whilesome hoped that Emma would improve and prove her critics wrong, others understood Emma didn’t have as much knowledge as she let on. Working hard throughout the charter season, Emma did her best, but with a lack of improvement and a tough time taking the necessary steps to learn, she wasn’t someone who Captain Glenn Shephard or First Officer Gary King could trust aboard Parsifal III. There are someBelow Deckalumni, however, who would do well in her place.
8Kelsie Goglia
Below Deck Sailing Yacht
A formerBelow Deck Sailing Yachtdeckhand,Kelsie Goglia worked aboard Parsifal III for only a season. Though the deckhand was skilled at her job, she did face some adversity throughout her time aboard the sailing yacht with the rest of Captain Glenn’s crew. Female deckhands who are both strong in their skills and lauded by the rest of the crew are hard to come by, but Kelsie was a rare mix of skilled and adaptable, which didn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the crew. During hertime onBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 3, Kelsie was a force.
20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now
Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.
Throughout her time on the show, Kelsie was known for her positive, sunny demeanor and her ample ability. Though Gary tested her during the season, it was clear that he and the rest of the exterior team were impressed by and trusting in her abilities. Kelsie was a more laid-back yachtie than the team was used to andwould be a great fit to replace Emma after such a difficult startto the charter season.

7Ben Willoughby
Below Deck
As one of the notoriously hard-working hard-playing yachties in theBelow Deckfranchise, Ben Willoughby would be an interesting fit with the rest of the crew onBelow Deck Sailing Yacht.Ben, who appeared in the two most recent seasons ofBelow Deckwith both Captain Lee Rosbach and Captain Kerry Titheradge, has a great skillset and the ability to work well with the rest of a yacht crew, though it’s not clear if he has all of the necessary skills to work aboard a sailing yacht. Ben’s time on the show, however, wasn’t without its fair share of drama.
ThroughoutBelow Deckseason 11, Ben’s abilities made it clear that he was one of the best crew members the franchise has seen in years. Though he’s sometimes overly confident in his abilities, Ben’s understanding of the exterior team’s responsibilities was good enough to push him from lead deckhand to bosun, and had some wondering where he would go next. While Ben’s had some drama withBelow Deck’sCaptain Kerry,he could be a great fit for Parsifal III.
6Sydney Zaruba
As anotherBelow Deck Sailing Yachtalumni, Sydney Zaruba would be another strong woman who could take over where Emma left off. Throughout hertime onBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 2, Sydney was known for more than just her work on the exterior team. Though she was good with her job responsibilities, her hard work was often left on the back burner in exchange for her interpersonal drama on the show. In one ofBelow Deck Sailing Yacht’s first love triangles,Sydney was involved with Gary, who was also involved with stew Alli Dore during the season.
While Sydney’s appearance onBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 2 may not have been all about her experiences as a deckhand, the fact that she was moving through the charter season in a world of personal drama and still able to work hard shows great character.Sydney’s strong work ethic and clear sense of experience aboard a sailing yacht were valuablethroughout the season, and could be something useful for the current crew. Her ability to compartmentalize could be a great asset toBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 5.
5João Franco
Below Deck Mediterranean & Below Deck Down Under
An infamousBelow Deckvillain, João Franco has appeared on two shows from the franchise, andwithBelow Deck Sailing Yacht, could appear on a third. João’s first appearance onBelow Deck Mediterraneanseason 3 made it clear that he knew what he was doing. Coming into the season as a lead deckhand, he was knowledgable and hardworking, but short-tempered. His personality was hard for some other yachties to handle throughout the season, even though his skills were enviable.João’s boatmances gave him an interesting edge, but his skills were what brought him back forBelow Deck Medseason 4.
João leftBelow Deck Mediterraneanafter season 4, but returned to the franchise surprisingly onBelow Deck Down Underseason 2 as the season’s bosun. Working hard aboard Northern Sun, João’s abilities were highlighted throughout the season. His professionalism was a surprise to someBelow Deckviewers, but João’s maturity was great to see. WhileEmma’s role onBelow Deck Sailing Yachtmay be below his pay grade, João would be a great asset to the crew.
4Alex Propson
Another formerBelow Deck Sailing Yachtyachtie,Alex Propson was on the shows last seasonwhere he was able to show off his skills throughout the charter season.Alex’s time as a deckhand was highlighted with a strong work ethic, which is always helpful in theBelow Deckfranchise. Throughout the season, it was clear that Alex was one of the more laid-back yachties, which helped him to build relationships with other crew members throughout the season and even jump into romantic entanglements with some of the stews aboard Parsifal III.
While Alex was a great addition toBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 4, he didn’t return initially for the current charter season. His work throughout the last season of the series was great, and after the show,Alex went on to show a completely different side of himself on Bravo’sWinter House, where he appeared along with Malia White and Aesha Scott. Alex has the skillset and the personality to be entertaining and work well onBelow Deck Sailing Yacht.
3Paget Berry
Although he’s been off the show for years,Paget Berry appeared as the First MateonBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 1 and could come back for another stint on the series in the future. Paget, who’s been replaced by Gary in the last four seasons of the series, wasskilled in his work and clearly knew his way around a sailing yacht. Working well with the rest of the crew, Paget’s relationship was a major part of his time onBelow Deck Sailing Yacht, which would make another appearance on the show starkly different.
Paget’s long-term relationship with fellowBelow Deck Sailing Yachtcrew member, deckhand Ciara Duggan, was a huge part of his time on the series initially. Though the pair went through their fair share of drama aboard Parsifal III, neither chose to return to the sailing yacht for the next season ofBelow Deck Sailing Yacht.Paget’s return to the series would be a welcome surprise, as his skills are something that the crew could currently use.
2Nathan Gallagher
Below Deck Mediterranean
As aBelow Deck Mediterraneanseason 9 newcomer, Nathan Gallagher was a welcome addition to the crew of the Mustique in the most recent season of the series.A deckhand who Captain Sandy Yawn shared was her personal pick for the leadduring the season, Nathan was knowledgable about yachting and had the skills needed to take on the deckhand role. While he struggled through some of the charters due to poor leadership and planning on his bosun’s part, Nathan was always able to make things work and explain to others what they needed to do.
Nathan’s time onBelow Deck Mediterraneanseason 9 had its share of drama, especially when it came tohis boatmance with fellow deckhand Gael Cameron. Nathan and Gael’s relationship moved slowly, as she had been dating someone throughout the early charters of the season.Nathan’s relationship drama didn’t take away from his work, which was a pleasant surprise throughout the season. He’d be a great addition to theBelow Deck Sailing Yachtcrew.
1Chase Lemacks
One of the most buzzed-aboutyachties ofBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 4, Chase Lemacks, was known for his work ethic andhis ability to defend himself against Gary, who seemed to have personal issues with Chase. While Gary and Chase’s drama was interesting to watch, the fact that it pushed the focus away from Chase’s work was tough on the deckhand. Chase, who’s a hard-working and capable yachtie, made it clear that he wasn’t interested in entertaining drama when there was work to do.
Known for his sense of humor and the drama that seemed to follow him around throughoutBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 4, Chase’s time with Gary was a learning experience, andhis work aboard Parsifal III helped sharpen his skills. Though Chase had some issues to overcome, it was clear that he was a skilled deckhand who knew what he was doing throughout the charter season. It also appears thatChase will wind up being Emma’s replacementaboard Parsifal III onBelow Deck Sailing Yachtseason 5.
